Chuck Berry was not always known as a cosmic performer. He traveled State to State and Country to Country with only his guitar and toothbrush in tow, constantly relying on pick up bands he hardly rehearsed with. The result for fans could often be disappointing and frustrating. It was evident once he took the stage that you were in the presence of greatness, but the finished product would too often appear sloppy, out of tune and limited to a half hour of his greatest hits. Those who loved him honored him with the purchase of a ticket. The respect was usually not a two way street. Chuck would get his money up front, give you his time and split. But every so often the genius would make itself known and on a real good night you could see and hear what separated Mr. Berry from the rest of the pack making him the leader. This understated performance of “Nadine” in Australia provides insights into his lyrical ingenuity (” I saw her on the corner when she turned and doubled back and started walkin’ toward a coffee colored Cadillac, I was pushin’ through the crowd tryin’ to get to where she’s at And I was campaign shouting like a southern diplomat”), profound and soulful guitar pioneering and vocal prowess featuring unique phrasing not often associated with the Rock genre. The revelation during a moment such as this was that Johnny B. Goode was actually Chuck The Great and one of the finest performers to ever address an audience. Chuck Berry was The Exalted Mystic Ruler of “Rock and Roll” when that term really meant something. - Rich Buckland
