Heroes have been in very short supply lately. With the recent exit of Mandela and now Pete, we have come to recognize that these children of the Communist movement were every bit as ‘dangerous’ as we were once informed they were. I thank goodness for that. Thank you for your diverse service Pete!

Protest just ain’t what it used to be. In a different age and rage we had leaders within a cause defining required actions that could deliver a Sunday punch to the out of touch upper class mass. Seeger, Woody and Cohen spoke generously of such intent. In many ways, they still light the way home.

Leonard Cohen - Pete Seeger- From The 1977 Televison Series "All You Need Is Love" - A Slice of Episode 12 - "Go Down, Moses!: Songs of War and Protest”

1974 was a very good year. Leonard Cohen had come to NY to promote his recording ‘New Skin for the Old Ceremony’. I was able to witness this event with Mr. Cohen singing ten feet before me at The Bottom Line in NYC. He gently plowed those NY nights with a poetic intent, lost for so very long.

In 1954 socialite Elaine Lorillard financed a Jazz Festival at Newport Rhode Island. She hired Jazz promoter George Wein to organize. It became the place to be for many aspects of that great Art for many years. In 1959 Wein expanded the notion to Folk, Blues and Bluegrass. The results are historic.

Pete Seeger- The Beyond Legendary Mr. Seeger As He Appeared At His Madison Sqaare Garden 90th Birthday Celebration.

The House Committee on Un-American Activities called Seeger to hearings in 1955; instead of citing the Fifth Amendment as grounds for silence, Seeger cited the First, a move for which he was sentenced to a year in jail for contempt of court. At 94, Pete is still the very conscience of America.
