MY WEDDING SONG

EPISODE #7: LEON RUSSELL by Leon Russell (Shelter Records, 1970)

“I love you in a place where’s no space and time…”

A Song For You was the song we danced to at our wedding, the one the groom and bride have to do by themselves with everyone watching. I buried my face into Chemayne’s shoulder, because she was taller than me.

“I love you for my life, you are a friend of mine…”

We got married in 1989, well after the 8 track era had waned. However, this cartridge had metaphysical properties, so important to the alchemy of our relationship. A year earlier, when we were planning to tie the knot, Chemayne wanted to take me out to Washington State, way out to the Olympic peninsula, to go see her dad, and introduce me.

Murray is a survivalist, an anti-establishment guy, who lives way off the grid. He got himself a patch of land, powered it by his own generator, and heated his salvaged double wide with a pot belly stove. The “guest house” was an ancient Airstream parked on the property, cozy and wood paneled. And, lo and behold, inside it there was an 8 track player, suspended from its ceiling, along with a single tape: Leon Russell.

As the tape serenaded us, we made love to Dixie Lullaby, Delta Lady, and A Song for You. Right then and there our future was sealed, and as the trailer rocked along with our bodies, our soul’s union was blessed by the Wizard of Tulsa himself, the anchoring keyboardist of the Wrecking Crew, the “Mad Dog” amidst the Englishmen, Leon (incidentally, my father’s name) Russell.
