“CAPTAIN BILLY’S MAGIC 8 BALL” – EPISODE # 15 – “HEAVEN ON EARTH”- FEATURING THE ALBUM “HIS HAND IN MINE” By ELVIS PRESLEY (RCA, 1960) IN HIGH DEFINITION WITH NARRATIVE BY CAPTAIN BILLY-

“HEAVEN ON EARTH

Elvis sounds right at home singing gospel. On HIS HAND IN MINE the King swings and swoons while the Jordanaires provide heavenly cushioning from above and below. He was one of the greatest singers that America has ever produced, and, ironically, some have taken him for granted because he was also simply one of the best rock n roll singers, too, and sexy as hell. And, funnily enough, this sexiness appears not only to be a gift from, but also to God.

It has been said that Elvis viewed himself primarily as a gospel singer, and in HIS HAND IN MINE, you can hear that quiet conviction in every note. His delicate, worshipful voice presents itself as a bride of Christ to the great spirit, and his magnificent gender fluidity is fully realized. And, when one reflects on the magnetism that Elvis effected on both sexes throughout his career, and all the women that prostrated themselves at the altar of Presley, one might overlook the understanding that Elvis himself was but a lost sheep, yearning for the care and protection of a savior and protector. First it was Mama Gladys, later it was the Colonel, but it was always about Christ.

Another genius of musical synthesis that comes to mind is Ray Charles, who mixed worship and sex, and in the process created a new kind of music. Likewise, when Sam Philips found Elvis and fashioned him as proselytizer to the nation, one who would bring the good news via the hip shaking hosanna, it wasn’t just cultural appropriation, it was a revelation: that the church, with its promise of a life beyond, would be the matrix where black and white could come together to dance and sing as one.
