“KEEPING IT SIMPLE

EPISODE #34 JIMMY REED NOW APPEARING by Jimmy Reed (Vee Jay, 1960)

The first time I read the name “Jimmy Reed” was on the back cover of The Rolling Stones debut album, beside the title HONEST I DO. I was eleven years old, and the Stones loping imitation of Reed’s style immediately intrigued me. Later, I heard Pigpen singing BIG BOSS MAN – there it was again: the same beat, the same laconic style. The name “Jimmy Reed” was an incantation to me: legendary as the creator of this unique, simple, rhythmic guitar pattern, solidly supporting a non-metaphoric set of slurred lyrics. None of this prepared me for the experience of hearing the original – his swampy, insistent, instrumental delivery, topped by his trademarked, relaxed, nasal croon, punctuated with minimalist harp and guitar licks, was irresistible.

Jimmy was no hot dog, but, equipped with a modicum of expertise, Jimmy’s influence was titanic, ranging across the landscape of Rock, Pop, and Blues of the latter half of the 20th century. As Billy Vera observed, Jimmy Reed’s simplistic approach marked him as a “50’s Punk Bluesman”, and whatever the appeal was, people loved it. Jimmy brought 11 of his songs to the Billboard Pop Top 100. And, despite his epilepsy (misconstrued as DTs), and his suicidal alcoholism (resulting in his early demise at age 51), Jimmy toured and recorded extensively, albeit with his wife, Mama Reed, sitting right by his side, whispering the lyrics, line by line, into his ear.

This coveted 8 track, JIMMY REED NOW APPEARING, arrived in a blues lot, (also containing Freddie King, Siegal-Schwall Band, Mance Lipscomb, and John Lee Hooker), and became a perennial favorite for the time machine. It doesn’t showcase any of the big, well known hits, but it doesn’t matter – Jimmy Reed is always Jimmy Reed: one of a kind – a slow, steady vehicle, chugging me along the highway of life.
