“AN UNFORGETTABLE PERFORMANCE

THE CAPTAIN UNEARTHS ANOTHER 8 TRACK TREASURE!

A NOD IS AS GOOD AS A WINK…TO A BLIND HORSE by Faces (WB, 1971)

I was a freshman at the University of Iowa, dating a girl named Michelle. We dropped acid on our first date, which had been set up by a recently made connection, who I met in the school cafeteria. He assured me that Michelle REALLY liked tripping. So did I, so it seemed like a natural fit. Boy, was that ever a miscalculation, and, as much as I like confessionals, I won’t go into the details. Suffice it to say that our relationship was fraught throughout that entire semester.

In the dead of that Iowa winter, after mistakenly taking a 4-way hit of “window pane”, I checked myself into the University hospital, and pleaded with them to put me to sleep. Drinking a quart of wine and trudging through 30 below wind chill did nothing to calm me down. The doctor gave me four seconals, saying “take one, and if you wake up, take another.” I took all 4.

I slept for 36 hours, and the only reason I woke up was that Michelle was pounding on my door. She had tickets to see Faces with Rod Stewart, and invited me along. Somehow I managed to rouse myself and was stuffed into the rear seat of a VW for the 4 hour drive from Iowa City to Des Moines. Michelle, feeling jubilant, was on my lap the whole way, and couldn’t understand why I was being so moody, even though the last time I saw her, in the throes of a meth delirium, she had threatened to kill herself.

The stadium was worse than the car ride: thousands of screaming kids packed in like sardines. I tightened my grip on my equilibrium as I sat through that experiential roller coaster. But, every time the lights went down, and Rod Stewart commanded the proceedings, I relaxed, and even rocked a bit.

A NOD IS AS GOOD AS A WINK is a document of that good-timing, boogie band during their heyday. A blockbuster that made it to #6 on the charts, it contains the hit “Stay with Me”, and was bolstered by Rod’s meteoric solo success with “Maggie May.” That ubiquitous ditty that was impossible to avoid hearing during 1971. The Faces helped me survive my trauma that night, and their great music has provided solace to me throughout the intervening years.
