“CAPTAIN BILLY’S MAGIC 8 BALL” – ” HAPPINESS IS” – FEATURING THE ALBUM “GET HAPPY ” By ELVIS COSTELLO IN HIGH DEFINITION WITH NARRATIVE EPISODE # 41 THE CAPTAIN MINES HIS COVE OF 8 TRACK TREASURES!

“HAPPINESS IS…”

GET HAPPY!!! by Elvis Costello and The Attractions (1980, Columbia)

There is no doubt that this self-named Elvis has proven himself to be perhaps the most omnivorous pop musician in rock history. This guy has tackled every form and style from Burt Bacharach collaborations to string quartets, and Americana folk. Emerging from bonafide Punk roots, he has blossomed into the Lord of an encyclopedic volume of expressions.

In 1980, coming off the heels of a notorious drunken row with Bonnie Bramlett, wherein the former Declan McManus pronounced, in an abundantly provocative mood, James Brown and Ray Charles (two of America’s most cherished icons), “ignorant,” and “jive-assed”, Costello retreated to a studio in Amsterdam, where he created this R&B masterpiece.

Full disclosure: I’ve never been enamored of Costello’s husky bray, or of his show-offy propensity to spew more verbiage than I was able to digest in one, or even repeated, listenings. But this rockin’ record grabbed me immediately when it came out, and has never released its grip. These 20 explosive cuts, one great hook after another, bursting with Soulful Ska energy, were produced by the great Nick Lowe. Oh, yes, and featuring one of the best organ performances ever by Steve Nieve, this album delivers a devastating series of knock-out punches. It’s as if Elvis was possessed – on fire with a desire to deliver his zealous testimony. He denied any apologetic intent, but it certainly sounds like an homage to the American artists and music that inspired him.
