“CAPTAIN BILLY’S MAGIC 8 BALL” – “FROM BAUHAUS TO MY HOUSE” – FEATURING THE ALBUM “AUTOBAHN” By KRAFTWERK IN HIGH DEFINITION WITH NARRATIVE – - EPISODE # 43 - THE CAPTAIN MINES HIS COVE OF 8 TRACK TREASURES!

“FROM BAUHAUS TO MY HOUSE

AUTOBAHN by Kraftwerk (Mercury, 1974)

For a Jew whose father wouldn’t buy anything German after WW2, my attraction to Kraftwerk was a guilty pleasure. I liked the aesthetic of the band’s clean lines, sonically and visually, and as someone who has spent his life in the theater, the concept of form meeting content in Autobahn was irresistible.

In my view of the history of pop music, there is before Kraftwerk, and after Kraftwerk. Sure, Moog introduced us to the synth in the mid-sixties, and Wendy Carlos popularized it with her renderings of Bach a few years later, but her stuff adapted already existing forms to the new technology. The total immersive, robotic ambience of the German duo, Florian Schneider and Ralf Hutter, as designed by Joseph Beuys protege Emil Schult, was a game changer. Simon Witter in NME states that this recording has “enormous historical significance”, and I agree. So did David Bowie and Brian Eno.

40 years on, the simple soundscape delivered by the pair’s Minimoog and Vox percussion King drum machine might sound quaint, but in 1974 it conjured a disorienting trance. And, listening to it once again, nearly a half-century later, I’m still mesmerized. The 22 minutes of the title track take me down a psychic freeway to a welcoming terrain of tranquility, wafted along by waves of synthesized bliss.
