MARIA MULDAUR by Maria Muldaur (WB, 1973)

In 1973, “Midnight at the Oasis” was a monster, mega-hit, and heralded the ascension of a bonafide folk revivalist to the upper echelons of commercial success. The fluid guitar lines of Amos Garrett slithering their way into the grooves of this amazing cut, surf under Maria Muldaur’s quirky insinuations, serving up an enticing jazz age seduction for the rock and roll generation. The time was right, and Maria Muldaur, nee D’Amato, was ready. This Greenwich Village bred prodigy had done her graduate work memorizing the 78s of Kitty Wells, Hank Williams, Ruth Brown, Fats Domino, and Muddy Waters. Then, wandering down to Washington Square, she joined up with John Sebastian and David Grisman to form the Even Dozen Jug Band. She may have begun playing classical violin, but it was all jazz, blues, and boogie after that.

I discovered the magic of Maria during the Kweskin Jug band years on the Garden of Joy album, crooning “I Ain’t Gonna Marry”. Drinking in the liner photos, I became obsessed with her braided, disheveled countenance. And, the slightly scratchy vocalizations always put me in mind of an alley cat in heat, and I couldn’t get enough. By the time she had divorced Geoff Muldaur, and emerged like a butterfly from a chrysalis, she had been cleaned up (slightly), sporting an exposed midriff, and a gardenia in her sensuous mop of curls.

This album, sumptuously produced by the estimable Joe Boyd and Lenny Waronker, employs the talents of the finest folk-rock musicians of the era: Ry Cooder, David Lindley, Dr. John, Spooner Oldham, just to name a few, laying down tracks composed by Dolly Parton, Dan Hicks, Kate McGarrigle, and Wendy Waldman. Pedigree is suffused into every groove. Hail Maria, full of grace!
