DONOVAN’S GREATEST HITS by Donovan (Epic, 1969)

Sometimes, in the life of a collector, windfalls occur. Not too long ago, an acquaintance of my wife’s, an older, hippie gentleman in the process of de-cluttering his house, gifted me a couple of shoeboxes filled with magnetically imprinted delights. Donovan’s Greatest Hits, an obviously well – played artifact was included – a grimy cart held together with scotch tape. But, oh, how the memories came flooding back: Sunshine Superman, Mellow Yellow, The Hurdy-Gurdy Man, Jennifer Juniper…. I won’t name all the alliterative titles, although every track is a gem. They were mostly produced by Mickie Most (more alliteration), an undeniable wizard responsible for the Animals and the Yardbirds, among others.

Donovan was, and still is, great. This Scottish psychedelic bard provided me with a lot of solace growing up. Even though I sometimes found his vibrato-soaked delivery fey and cloying, there was no denying its musical and spiritual power. Sometimes he rocked hard, too, and you can always detect a dab of mischievous irony beneath the messages of flower power.

My greatest Donovan treasure is the double album GIFT FROM A FLOWER TO A GARDEN, on vinyl, still in the box, with framable lyric cards included. I’m listening to that sucker these days on a regular rotation…and, I’ll catch myself singing: ”Mad John came down from Birmingham, very hastily…”

If your only acquaintance with Donovan was that scene in “Don’t Look Back,” wherein Dylan and his cronies mock the Scots aspirant mercilessly, you might be tempted to dismiss him. Ok, admittedly, Bob stands alone atop a mountain composed of the corpses of numerous folk-rock pretenders, but, Donovan safely occupies his own Tolkienesque landscape, happily populated by elven fairies, quirky trolls, and love-dazed Hippies. Namaste!!
