“PUT ON YOUR HEADPHONES

EPISODE #32: DARK SIDE OF THE MOON by Pink Floyd (Harvest, 1973)

You have to turn out the lights. It is the perfect record to put on in the dark with the headphones on. You don’t even have to be high, it just makes you feel that way. Appearing at the peak of the post-psychedelic, commercialization of interiority – a lot of teenagers, and twenty somethings used this recording to facilitate their soul’s search for solace, – and, often in the dark.

Syd Barrett went mad and left the group; the more disciplined David Gilmour had filled the gap; Roger Waters’ quest for the perfect lunatic concept album was in full swing, and the evocative Hipgnosis cover of the prism, portraying a single beam of white light transformed into a full spectrum of color, seemed to signal the way towards the future. It all came together to create one of the most successful albums in history: 14X Platinum, 40 million copies, and a spot in the Library of Congress.

When Clare Terry’s soprano improvises the vocal in “The Great Gig in the Sky”, it’s akin to Merry Clayton’s hair-raising turn in Gimme Shelter – a brain bursting performance. The time-squashing signature in “Money” causes my tongue to stagger when I try to sing along. The intended theme of “A Place for Assorted Lunatics,” intimating warnings of the dangers of greed, time, death, and insanity might have been obscure, but the music spoke clearly enough, tied all together – with the help of the EMS VCS 3 synth. It’s elegant dread speaks volumes.

The Dark of Side of the Moon cartridge is one of the most sought after jewels of the 8 track realm – hard to find, and generally overpriced. I found mine under a pile of stuff, in a storage locker on the Olympic peninsula, buried under several inches of snow. It was like an archaeological dig, yielding one of the most satisfying resuscitations in my collecting career. It plays like a brand new tape – a cryogenic miracle.

Excuse me, as I click off the lamp, lie back, and adjust the volume in my cans – I’m going on a lunar expedition. I’ll see you on the dark side of the moon.
