“CAPTAIN BILLY’S MAGIC 8 BALL” – EDWIN STARR- “FULL TILTFEATURING THE ALBUM “WAR AND PEACEBY EDWIN STARR IN HIGH DEFINITION WITH NARRATIVEEPISODE # 56

WAR AND PEACE by Edwin Starr (Gordy, 1970)

“FULL TILT

“War…(Good God, y’all)…What is it good for? Absolutely Nothin’!!”

Apologies; I just had to do that. That phrase was implanted into my 17 year old brain fifty years ago, and is glued in there tightly, to be recalled, at will. War, (which originally was a Temptations album track, from which Edwin Starr hijacked the lead vocal) – was #1 on the Billboard chart for 15 weeks, and is immortal. It was the follow up to 25 Miles, another blockbuster for Mr. Starr. He is also responsible for Agent Double-O Soul, and O How Happy, among other classics. He was such a force for the little Ric-Tic label, that Berry Gordy bought the company to eliminate the competition.

This album, released on Motown during the height of the Viet Nam debacle, contains that anti-war firecracker, and what is breathtaking is the amount of energy that this singer consistently generates – he goes FULL TILT, ALL THE WAY through the album, aided by the pumping arrangements by David Van Pitte, Henry Cosby, Paul Riser, Wade Marcus, and Willie Shorter, which propel the awe inspiring Mr. Starr into outer space, and keep him soaring there.

Edwin Starr, born Charles Edwin Hatcher, in 1942, became a Northern Soul deity. He relocated to the UK in 1983, and remained there until his untimely death by heart attack, at age 61, in 2003. England’s gain was America’s loss. But, as this Psychedelic Soul masterpiece attests, there once was a Starr in the Motown firmament named Edwin.
