“DOOMED FROM THE START

THE MISFITS by Alex North (UA, 1961)

This John Huston film is legendary for being the last movie that both Clark Gable and Marilyn Monroe ever made. Gable, 60, insisted on doing his own stunts in the 100 plus degree Reno heat, and died 12 days after filming was completed. Marilyn’s marriage to screenwriter Arthur Miller was breaking down, along with her psyche; she was always late to work – filming had to be halted to accommodate her taking a 2-week hospital stay-, and she died the following year. Acting coach, Paula Strassberg, a fixture on the set, was there to cajole the crumbling Monroe through her scenes, and her masseur and confidant, Ralph Roberts, was cast on the project so her could remain close by. (Years later, I worked with Ralph Roberts on a play. I wish I had known about his being there – perhaps I might have heard some of his stories up close and personally).

Alex North (born Isadore Soifer) became an esteemed cinematic composer – only one of two film scorers (with Ennio Morricone) to be given a Lifetime Achievement Oscar. This soundtrack is a mid-career item, but it displays his flexible approach: the main theme of “Roslyn” (Monroe’s character) reoccurs in various iterations: a sweeping romantic concerto, a cocktail dance, and in jazz form. There is a western motif, of course, in Reno Bar Dance, and a rock n roll sax romp (Paddleball). Soundtracks were a staple in the 8 Track era. This hands-free, looped tape format, was originally designed to be part of an automobile’s essential equipment and driving experience, and it suits the film score perfectly. Imagine tooling along the Pacific Coast Highway, or across the vast plains of America, listening to Alex North’s lush accompaniment, inside of your own movie: HEAVEN!
