“BUBBLEGUM SOUL

THE ARCHIES GREATEST HITS by The Archies (Kirshner, 1970)

Don’t fight it; you can’t resist this confection. Masterminded by pop mogul Don Kirshner, after being unceremoniously fired by his first fictional group, The Monkees, because the ingrates developed minds of their own, this cartoon ensemble could be totally controlled, or rebellious individuals could be replaced easily if need be. Then, Don enlisted the finest songwriting and session musicians to his new vision and constructed the first and greatest Bubblegum megahit of the animated supergroup The Archies: Sugar Sugar, which made it to #1, and unleashed an irritatingly insistent earworm into the brains of the nation. Lending his voice as Archie, America’s favorite redheaded rockin’ teenager, was the professionally incomparable Ron Dante.

I dug Superman and Batman, but Betty and Veronica were my prepubescent lures into the world of comic books. I may have been too cool for this Riverdale crew by the time the late sixties rolled around, but there is no denying the staying power of these animated heroes: The Archie show spawned several radio hits, but the nation’s capacity for obsession didn’t stop there – fifty years later, in 2020, Riverdale, the dramatic live-action series continued the adventures of Archie, Jughead, et al., and as I write this an Indian production company is busy preparing a series for Netflix.

The Archies were an early triumph of integrated marketing, and a canny manipulation of our preference for fantasy over real-life. So what?! Pour a little sugar on me, baby!
